On June 24, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and on August 29, his martyrdom. “With the exception of the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, the Precursor of Jesus, is the only saint whose birth is celebrated in the liturgy, and this is because it is intimately linked to the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God,” explained Benedict XVI during an Angelus in 2012.
