"As a little boy I wanted to be like those men who wear the cassock because they are good people."

Name: Logyaa Rutilos Nyong.
Age: 31 years old.
Situation: Priest.
Origin: Damongo, Ghana.
Study: Theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.

My name is Logyaa Rutilos Nyong, I am from Ghana, West Africa. I was born on Sunday, May 20, 1990. I grew up in a small town called Nandom, in the Upper West Region of Ghana. There are six of us in my family: my parents, an older sister, myself, and two younger brothers. Sadly, some time ago I lost my father and one of my two younger brothers.

My vocational path started at an early age; in elementary school. I used to joke every time my teacher asked me what I wanted to be in the future. I would tell him that "I wanted to be like those men who wear the cassock because they are good people". Of course, at the beginning I was just joking, but this idea remained and grew in me over the years, until I entered the minor seminary. That's where I really got to know the priests more closely.

Unfortunately, after finishing my four years of studies in the minor seminary I lost interest in continuing my journey in the major seminary. I was more interested in going to college and pursuing a career in nursing school, or finding a job that would allow me to earn money quickly. Since leaving the seminary, I spent two years without studying; it was not easy to get admission to the courses I wanted. After these two years without studies I met a priest; I considered him as a good friend of mine. This priest friend knew me and knew that I was trying to avoid the major seminary (i.e. to enter a formation path towards the ministerial priesthood). He knew how to guide me and gave me good advice.

So, after those years and the guidance of this priest friend, I began a process of discernment with which I tried to gain admission to the Major Seminary. However, I must tell you that at the beginning I had many doubts and fears because I was not one hundred percent sure of my decision and my ability to be a seminarian, indeed, to be a priest. So, at the same time, I still wanted to try the Admission in three more university schools along with the letter of application for admission to the Seminary.

And so, in that same year, all the schools (1 university and 2 institutes) plus the major seminary admitted me. In fact, I had to struggle to choose between these admissions; all the doors were now open to me. In the end, I freely chose to enter the major seminary. My decision was not in accordance with the wishes of some of my family and friends, however, they are very happy with my decision and my call.

I am currently in the second semester of the third year of the first cycle of theology at the International Ecclesiastical College Sedes Sapientiae in Rome. The subjects I see are: Pastoral Theology, Spiritual Theology, Social Moral Theology, Canon Law, Eschatology, Christian Archaeology, Sacrament of Penance, Sapiential Books and Johannine Writings.

Being in Rome is a wonderful experience of study, fraternity and holiness.
