He sold firewood, banana leaves, and food to continue his studies. His priestly vocation began when he was an altar boy, and thanks to the help of several people, he was able to train in Uganda and Spain. Today he serves as a priest in the United States.

Father Lawrence's story is defined by one word: perseverance. He was born on April 27, 1993, in Uganda, into a large, devoutly Catholic family. There were twelve of him. When he was just nine years old, his father died, and his mother, Annet, had to raise the family alone.

«90% of my Catholicism is due to my family,» Father Kawagga acknowledges in this interview with the CARF Foundation. He received his first teachings of the faith at home, even before attending catechism classes. His older brothers helped him read the Bible and discover how to integrate his spiritual life with his other responsibilities.

But family life wasn't easy. His father's absence forced everyone to pitch in. From a young age, Lawrence began looking for different ways to earn money to help at home and continue his studies. He sold firewood and banana leaves in town, carried water from the ponds, sold food—mangoes, corn, and avocados—and did construction work.

Sometimes he would travel up to ten kilometers between his home and the city to sell these products. "My family used to help me with my studies, and some friends helped me too," he explains. He, for his part, did everything he could to keep going.

The importance of being an altar boy

Amidst those difficulties, his vocation also began to emerge. Lawrence was an altar boy, and his proximity to the altar and the priests awakened in him a restlessness that, in time, would become a life decision.

«"My vocation arose when I was young, when I became an altar boy. I helped at Mass and the example of the priests made me want to be like them," he says.

In 2005, when he was still very young, Lawrence already knew he wanted to enter the seminary. The problem was financial: "I wanted to enter the seminary, but the cost was very high," he explains.

For that reason, he had to continue his studies at a Protestant school. But even there, he refused to renounce his faith. One day, he asked the headmaster to allow a Catholic priest to celebrate Mass for the Catholic students. The headmaster agreed, and in this way, Lawrence was able to continue receiving the sacraments.

Years passed, but that flame continued to burn within him. In 2011, he finally found the help he needed. "A priest helped me financially to enter the seminary," he recounts. Later, his bishop and others continued to collaborate so that Lawrence's vocation could flourish.

At the seminary of the Diocese of Kasana-Luweero, in his native Uganda, he studied Philosophy for three years and, subsequently, Theology for two years. His path to the priesthood was beginning to take shape.

From Uganda to Pamplona

It was then that his bishop sent him to Spain to continue their studies at the International Ecclesiastical College Bidasoa and at the University of Navarra. He arrived in 2018 and remained in Spain until 2023.

«"I was given a very warm welcome in 2018 and that continued until I left," she says.

In Pamplona, he found not only a university where he could complete his academic training, but also an international community that would profoundly shape his experience. "I loved studying with seminarians from 39 countries. That gave me a lot of life experience," he explains.

For a young man from Uganda, living with seminarians from so many parts of the world was an opportunity to broaden his perspective on the Church.

«"Being with people from various countries has helped me to be a more international priest and to have a better approach to each person," he says.

He also had to face one of the biggest challenges of his arrival in Spain: the language.

«"It wasn't always easy, because I come from a country that speaks 45 dialects and whose national language is English. So it wasn't easy to learn Spanish," she admits.

However, he ended up turning that difficulty into a tool for his future ministry. "I thank God because now I can speak Spanish well, which has helped me a lot in my ministry as a priest," he says.

A training that bears fruit

His time in Bidasoa and at the University of Navarra was not limited to academic preparation. Lawrence especially emphasizes the spiritual growth he experienced during those years.

«My spirituality expanded greatly and remains so to this day,» he says. Among the memories he cherishes most is the way he experienced the liturgy: «I loved the liturgy in Bidasoa, the reverence for the Holy Eucharist.».

He adds that that experience has directly influenced his current ministry: "It's my strongest point when preaching now.".

The training he received in Spain has also helped him to connect with people from different cultures and to navigate an international pastoral context. The Spanish he learned during his years in Pamplona has even become a tool for his ministry.

After returning to Uganda, Lawrence spent a year doing pastoral work in his diocese of Kasana-Luweero. He was later ordained a deacon and, on August 17, 2024, received priestly ordination.

His first assignment as a priest was the parish of Katikamu, where he remained for a year. Afterward, his bishop sent him to the United States, to the Diocese of Grand Island in Nebraska. He currently serves at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Kearney.

Christ as director

The priestly life has taken Lawrence from Uganda to the United States, passing through Spain. Three countries, three cultures, and very different experiences have helped him to better understand the universality of the Church.

Faced with the challenges of the priesthood, he believes that the essentials do not change: "Growing in faith in God and being prepared for what comes, putting Christ as our guide.".

Lawrence knows he couldn't have made that journey alone. His family was fundamental. So were the priests who accompanied him, his bishop, and the people who made his formation possible. Among them, the benefactors of the CARF Foundation.

His gratitude towards them is especially expressive: "CARF's benefactors are angels sent from heaven to come to our rescue.".

And he explains why his help has a reach that goes far beyond each priest who receives a scholarship: "Many of us would not be what we are, but because of his generosity we are priests.".

Table of Contents

The importance of being an altar boy

From Uganda to Pamplona

A training that bears fruit

Christ as director

Questions and answers about supporting parish priests

1. Why should lay people take an active role in parish life?

Because the mission of the Church does not rest solely on the shoulders of the priest. The CARF Foundation emphasizes the conciliar doctrine: "From Baptism we are incorporated into Christ and participate in our own way in the three ministries: priestly, prophetic, and royal.".

The presence and shared responsibility of the laity in the parish community "is essential for its existence, as well as, at the same time, for our own Christian identity and mission." Don't wait for the priest to ask for your help: offer yourself proactively.

2. How does our participation in Holy Mass influence the priest?

A vibrant liturgy lightens the priest's workload and spiritually uplifts the entire congregation, as the Constitution teaches. Sacrosanctum Concilium (14), safeguarded in the Magisterium of the Holy See. "Holy Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful be led to that full, conscious and active participation in the liturgical celebrations which the nature of the liturgy itself demands, and to which the Christian people have a right and an obligation by virtue of their baptism.".

Offering yourself for altar service – as a reader, altar server, or in the parish choir – allows celebrations to flow with serenity and beauty, enabling the priest to focus on the mystery he presides over.

3. How can we take care of the parish priest's well-being and rest?

The priestly ministry demands a great deal of daily dedication. "Excessive workload and a lack of understanding from many can lead to exhaustion or frustration," notes a post on the Foundation's blog.

The layperson can alleviate this fatigue through "prayer and friendly accompaniment," opening the doors of homes and family plans to offer the parish priest moments of healthy recreation, fraternal trust, and rest.

4. Why is praying for priests irreplaceable?

A priest's fruitfulness depends on divine grace, and the faithful are called to be his invisible support. Although they don't usually express it outwardly, priests need your prayers to comfort them and help them continue their mission.

Praying daily for his holiness, doctrinal fidelity, and strength is a direct expression of filial communion. A concrete example of Christian tenderness is to remember with affection his birthday and the anniversary of his priestly ordination.

5. What do parish groups and the pastoral council contribute?

Parish groups are organized channels for growth in faith and charitable action. Joining them or participating in the pastoral council directly helps the parish priest plan the liturgical year and coordinate activities.

Get involved with the initiatives in your parish that best match your personal or professional interests; the parish priest will appreciate having committed and organized people.

6. How can one collaborate effectively in catechesis?

Being a catechist is not merely an administrative task, but a true vocation of transmitting the living faith. Pope Francis reminded us of this in his apostolic exhortation. Christus Vivit (162) that the Lord calls us to: «Each of us, with our spiritual and intellectual resources, with our professional skills or our life experience, and also with our limitations and defects, strive to see ways of collaborating more and better in the immense task of putting Christ at the summit of all human activities.».

Creative and pedagogical collaborators are needed to help the priest to educate children, young people and adults through the testimony of their own lives.

7. What is the role of the lay person in parish Caritas?

Organized charity is the face of Christ to the most needy families in the community. The Caritas volunteer team identifies the needs of the neighborhood or town and distributes material aid (food, clothing, basic financial assistance). Joining this team alleviates a huge burden on the parish priest, ensuring that no one in the community is left without support.

8. How does financial aid affect the priestly mission?

«"You can also help financially. With a lot or a little. Sporadically or monthly," says a regular donor who has been supporting the church since 2000. Maintaining the worship, caring for the temple, and supporting the clergy require the generosity of the faithful.

Furthermore, donations to entities covered by the Patronage Law have significant tax deductions, which maximizes the real impact of each contribution, both at the parish level and in institutions dedicated to their integral formation such as the CARF Foundation.

Your help to the parish and your support for its pastor and priests can make a big difference in the life of the parish and in the life of the pastor. For communities to have pastors who are theologically, humanly, and spiritually prepared, ongoing formation is essential.

At the CARF Foundation We channel the generosity of thousands of benefactors to support the studies of seminarians and diocesan priests worldwide at prestigious ecclesiastical faculties.
