{"id":228691,"date":"2026-03-17T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/?p=228691"},"modified":"2026-03-16T15:15:39","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T14:15:39","slug":"sacerdote-haiti-meses-sin-celebrar-eucaristia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/en\/sacerdote-haiti-meses-sin-celebrar-eucaristia\/","title":{"rendered":"Haitian priest: \u00absometimes a year passes without celebrating the Eucharist\u00bb.\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Catholics in Haiti<\/strong> often experience a situation that is surprising in other parts of the world: they are communities of the faithful who spend months without being able to <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/la-eucaristia-memorial-del-corazon\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/la-eucaristia-memorial-del-corazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celebrating and living the Eucharist<\/a>. <strong>Hugues Paul<\/strong>, from the diocese of Jacmel, has known this reality since his childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That experience was decisive in his life. \u00abIn these church communities, sometimes almost a year can go by without the celebration of Holy Mass,\u00bb he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was precisely this shortcoming that awakened in him the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/oracion-por-las-vocaciones-sacerdotales\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"167694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vocation<\/a>. He grew up in a small community that in Haiti is known as the <strong>chapel<\/strong>, a church attached to a parish where, in the absence of priests, the faithful keep the faith alive with celebrations of the Word led by lay people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dios-le-llamo-para-ayudar-en-su-vina\">God called him to help as a priest in his vineyard.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abNormally there is a pastoral agent, whom we call the chapel director, in charge of presiding over celebrations of the Word in the absence of the priests\u00bb. In the midst of this reality, Fr. Hughes Paul felt God's call: \u00abIt was in this context that I felt God's call to lend a hand in his vineyard, to help his people to encounter him and to live the faith in a deeper way where the Eucharist was at the center\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MONTHS WITHOUT THE EUCHARIST, THE TESTIMONY OF HUGUES PAUL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wwKuOuDSI7g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hugues Paul was ordained <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/formacion-de-seminaristas-que-estudian\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"197148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">priest<\/a> the <strong>June 26, 2021<\/strong> and now has <strong>39 years old<\/strong>. The <strong>June 30, 2024<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/donar\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/donar\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thanks to the support<\/a> of the CARF Foundation and other institutions<\/strong>, and is currently completing a <strong>bachelor's degree in Biblical Theology<\/strong>, The final phase, already in its final phase, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unav.edu\/web\/facultad-de-teologia\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unav.edu\/web\/facultad-de-teologia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ecclesiastical Faculties of the University of Navarre<\/a>in Pamplona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a distance, he observes the situation in his country with concern. <strong>Haiti is going through a deep crisis marked by violence and insecurity.<\/strong> \u00abLife has become very difficult, especially because of the insecurity that affects almost the entire territory, especially the capital,\u00bb he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even in the midst of that context, <strong>faith remains one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/revocat-y-theogene-ruanda-necesita-la-fuerza-de-dios-y-de-la-iglesia-para-levantar-su-alma\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"156736\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">living force<\/a>. <\/strong>\u00abDespite this, the people continue to believe: many people take risks to find a place to live their faith and participate in the celebrations.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"las-consecuencias-del-gran-terremoto\">The consequences of the great earthquake<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jacmel diocese, located in the southeast of the country, is in a relatively more stable situation than in other regions, but the consequences of the <strong>great earthquake of 2010<\/strong> remain visible. \u00ab<strong>We are still awaiting the completion of the reconstruction of the cathedral and many destroyed parishes.<\/strong>\". <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of sufficient resources and aid has delayed for years these works, which for many communities are essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"los-catolicos-mas-del-60-de-la-poblacion\">Catholics in Haiti, more than 60 % of the population<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Catholics in <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hait%C3%AD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Haiti<\/strong><\/a> represent <strong>between 60 and 66 % of the population<\/strong>. In the diocese of Jacmel there are <strong>about 80 priests for 36 parishes<\/strong>, and in the country as a whole - adding the ten dioceses and the religious - it is estimated that there are <strong>between 800 and 900 priests<\/strong>. The universal Church has been a fundamental support in these difficult years. \u00abWe have received great support from the universal Church, especially through Aid to the Church in Need.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"espana-la-belleza-de-las-iglesias-y-su-secularizacion\">Spain: the beauty of churches and their secularization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>His experience in Spain has also made him reflect on the differences between the two ecclesial realities. What has impressed him most positively is \u00abthe beauty of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/servir-a-la-iglesia\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"169919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">churches<\/a>\u00bb. Even so, he believes that there are also opportunities to revitalize the life of the Church. In particular, he thinks that Spanish Catholics could draw inspiration from the way the liturgy is lived in Haiti. \u00ab<strong>Spanish Catholics could learn from Haitian Catholics enthusiasm for sung celebrations<\/strong>, The new programs, which help to make them more lively and participative\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cercano-y-coherente-con-la-fe\">Close and consistent with the faith<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking to the future, Hugues Paul is clear about what kind of priests the Church needs in the 21st century: \u00abto be close, empathetic and coherent with his faith; a good communicator, open to dialogue, sensitive to social problems, <strong>with a solid spiritual life<\/strong> and capable of accompanying without judging\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He considers this same attitude essential to approach those who today live far from the faith. \u00abTo <strong>evangelizing young people<\/strong> and those who are far from God, I consider it fundamental to listen to them with respect, to give testimony with one's own life, to use current language and digital media, to create welcoming spaces and to show that we are all in the same place. <strong>faith answers the real questions of today's world\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hugues Paul's story is a reminder of a reality that often goes unnoticed: in many parts of the world Christians spend many <strong>months without Eucharist<\/strong> and await the arrival of a priest to celebrate Holy Mass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Precisely from this waiting, new vocations are also born, ready to serve.
